Lighting a room in layers: ceiling, floor and table lamps

Why one ceiling light makes a room flat, and how to light it in three layers with warm bulbs at the right heights.

A living room with warm lamps at different heights and natural light from the window

Light a room in three layers: ambient light for the whole room, task light where you read or work, and accent light on art, shelves or plants. Use warm bulbs around 2700–3000 K and put light at different heights so no corner goes dark.

The three layers

  1. 01AmbientGeneral light that fills the room: a ceiling fitting, ideally on a dimmer, or several lamps together.
  2. 02TaskFocused light where you do things: a reading lamp beside the sofa, a desk lamp, light over the kitchen worktop.
  3. 03AccentSmall lights that create depth: a lamp on a shelf, a picture light, an uplight behind a plant.

Heights matter

A room feels warm when light comes from several heights: something high, something at eye level when seated, and something low. Aim for at least three sources in a living room, more in larger spaces.

Colour temperature

  • 2700 K: warm and cosy, ideal for living rooms and bedrooms.
  • 3000 K: warm but slightly crisper, good for kitchens and dining areas.
  • 4000 K and above: cool and bright, best kept for workspaces and garages.

Shades and materials

Fabric, paper and opal glass diffuse light softly; metal shades direct it downwards for reading. In a room with one strong ceiling light, the quickest improvement is adding two lamps and switching the ceiling light off.

room redesign plans light as part of every design: ask for “warmer evening light” and the lamps it suggests are real ones from stores in your country.
