The order that gives the biggest change for the least money: rearranging, light, textiles, paint, and then one piece worth spending on.

Change things in order of cost: clear and rearrange (free), fix the lighting (lamps and warm bulbs), change textiles (curtains, rug, cushions), paint one or more walls, and only then spend on one hero piece such as a sofa or a large rug.

  1. 01Clear and rearrangeTake out everything that is not used, then move the sofa off the wall or turn it towards the light. A new layout often feels like a new room.
  2. 02Fix the lightSwap cool bulbs for warm ones and add two lamps at different heights. It is the cheapest change with the biggest effect in the evening.
  3. 03Change the textilesCurtains hung higher and wider, a larger rug, new cushion covers and a throw in two or three colours that belong together.
  4. 04PaintA warm white or a soft colour on one wall changes the light in the whole room for the price of a few tins.
  5. 05One hero pieceThen spend where you touch it every day: usually the sofa, sometimes a large rug or a good lamp.

Where cheaper is fine

  • Side tables, cushion covers, vases and baskets.
  • Picture frames: a good mount makes an inexpensive print look expensive.
  • Plants: one large plant does more than several small ones.

Plan with a total

Budgets slip when pieces are bought one at a time. room redesign shows the whole room with a running total, so you can say “under 1,500” or “keep my sofa” and see what changes before you spend anything.
